Abacavir: an updated review on its properties and applications

El Plan Estratégico Nacional para la Prevención y Control de las ITS/VIH/sida, 2014-2018 en Cuba establece un grupo de acciones entre las que se encuentra la estandarización y optimización de esquemas de terapia antirretroviral, adecuación del inicio del tratamiento a las recientes recomendaciones de la Organización Mundial de la Salud, mejorar la calidad de la atención, la adherencia y la reducción del costo de los medicamentos. Para cumplir estas tareas se prevé introducir en el Cuadro Básico de Medicamentos algunos antirretrovirales genéricos cubanos para incrementar las posibles combinaciones de Terapia Antirretroviral de Alta Eficacia a disposición de los pacientes que viven con el virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana y sustituir importaciones. Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica exhaustiva para la actualización de la comunidad médica y científica; se examinaron las principales características del abacavir: propiedades químico‒físicas del principio activo, sus presentaciones comerciales, mecanismo de acción, farmacocinética y resistencia, reacciones adversas e interacciones, aplicaciones terapéuticas, dosificaciones, ajustes de dosis y seguridad en el embarazo. Para ello se consultaron un total de 58 artículos que incluyeron revisiones bibliográficas, trabajos originales, fichas técnicas, libros, conferencias y reportes. El abacavir es un antirretroviral relativamente nuevo y ampliamente recomendado por las guías de tratamiento por su efectividad demostrada.

The National Strategic Plan for the Prevention and Control of the IST/HIV/ aids, 2014-2018 in Cuba establishes a group of actions such as the standardization and optimization of antiretroviral therapy schedules, adaptation of the beginning of the treatment to the recent recommendations of the World Health Organization, the improvement of the quality of care, the adherence to and the reduction of the cost of medications. For the purpose of complying with these tasks, it is anticipated to introduce in the basic drug listing some Cuban generic antiretroviral drugs to increase the possible combinations of the Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy available for patients who live with the human immunodeficiency virus and to reduce imports. An exhaustive literature review was made for the update of the medical and scientific community knowledge. This article analyzed the main characteristics of abacavir such as chemical-physical properties of the active principle, their commercial presentations, mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics and resistance, adverse reactions and interactions, therapeutic applications, dosages, dose adjustments and safety at pregnancy. To this end, a total of 58 articles were consulted including literature reviews, original papers, technical records, books, lectures and reports. Abacavir is a relatively new antiretroviral, widely recommended by treatment guidelines on account of its proven effectiveness.

School of Pharmacy in the Cuban universitary context from January 1934 to March 1937

Se presentan los principales aspectos relativos al desempeño de la Escuela de Farmacia de la Universidad de La Habana desde enero de 1934 hasta marzo de 1937. Se destaca el diseño de un ambicioso plan de estudios, que no se pudo evaluar debidamente para su posible aplicación, a causa de la política represiva de los gobiernos de turno que impidió el desarrollo de las actividades académicas y docentes en la Universidad durante dos años. Asimismo se describe el proceso organización del curso extraordinario 1936-1937 bajo la dirección de las autoridades de la de nuevo independiente Facultad de Farmacia.

The main aspects related to the performance of the School of Pharmacy of the University of Havana from January 1934 to March 1937 were presented in this article. The design of an ambitious curriculum was stressed, which could not be duly evaluated for its possible implementation as a result of the repressive policy of the governments in power that hindered the development of the academic activities in the university during two years. The article also described the process of organization of the extraordinary course 1936-1937 under the leadership of the authorities of the once again independent School of Pharmacy.

Pharmacists from Jerez de los Caballeros (Badajoz, Spain) in 19th century

La Farmacia durante el siglo XIX erauna profesión separada de la Medicina, dedicada fundamentalmente a la preparación, conservación y dispensación de medicamentos. Mediante el análisis delos documentos existentes en el Archivo Histórico de la ciudad de Jerez de los Caballeros, se seguió el devenir de los boticarios y farmacéuticos de ese siglo, así como las vicisitudes y problemas que enfrentaron para su asentamientoen la localidad,mediante la presentación de sus títulos ante el Ayuntamiento, y para la apertura de sus respectivas oficinas de farmacia. Se pudo conocer que entre sus obligaciones estuvo el suministro de medicamentos a los enfermos pobres, alhospital, a los presos ya lospacientes militares. El Subdelegado de Farmacia fue el encargado de realizar inspecciones y evitar el intrusismo. Las viudas e hijos menores de los farmacéuticos fallecidos tuvieron el derecho de continuar con la farmacia abierta, siempre que la regentase un boticario autorizado.

Pharmacy was a profession separated from medicine, mainly devoted to preparation, storage and sale of drugs. By analyzing the Historical Files of the city of Jerez de los Caballeros, we studied the evolution of the druggists and pharmacists throughout the 19th century, their misfortunes and problems that faced to settle down in the town when presenting their titles to the Town Hall, and to open their retail pharmacies. Among their duties were the supply of medicines to poor patients, the Hospital, prisoners and military patients. The figure of subdelegate of Pharmacy was given the task of supervision and of avoiding intrusism. The widows and children of deceased pharmacists could continue with the pharmacy, provided that an authorized apothecary agreed to manage it.
