Some theoretical approaches to high value-added, tailor-made and knowledge-oriented services.

Resumen Se abordan los servicios bibliotecarios, documentales y de información desde una perspectiva teórica e histórica, su esencia, evolución y estado actual. Se definen los servicios de información de alto valor agregado, diseñados a la medida y orientados al conocimiento. El suministro de servicios de información con estas características es un precedente básico en la obtención de un alto impacto en una comunidad de usuarios y en la sociedad en general. Hoy, coexisten en la biblioteca, diversas generaciones de servicios dirigidos a la satisfacción de las variadas necesidades de información de los usuarios.

Library, documentary and information services are approached from a theoretical and historic perspective, considering their essence, evolution and present state. The high value-added, tailor-made, and knowledge-oriented information services are defined. The supply of information services with these characteristics is a basic precedent to obtain a high impact in a users' community and in society in general. Today, diverse generations of services directed to the satisfaction of the various needs of information of the users coexist in a library.

From information management to knowledge management

Se presentan algunas reflexiones sobre el estado actual de la gestión del conocimiento y su relación con la gestión de información. Se aborda desde el surgimiento de la gestión de información hasta las más actuales tendencias de los sistemas de información que descansan en la gestión del conocimiento. Se exponen conceptos fundamentales relacionados con la gestión del conocimiento y algunas consideraciones sobre ciertos elementos claves de este proceso como son: el recurso humano y las intranets.

Some reflections on the current state of knowledge management and its relation to information management are presented. The emergence of information management as well as the latest tendencies in the information systems relying on knowledge management are dealt with. Fundamental concepts connected with knowledge management and some considerations about certain key elements of this process, such as the human resource and intranets are exposed.

Organizational knowledge: the management of resources and human capital

Se definen y abordan las relaciones y diferencias entre las nociones de dato, información y conocimiento. Se caracteriza el conocimiento tácito y explícito, se analizan sus combinaciones posibles, así como la importancia de la gestión de ambos conocimientos para el desarrollo organizacional. Seguidamente, se trata el contexto teórico-práctico en que se desarrollan los procesos de identificación y desarrollo del conocimiento. Se aborda el conocimiento organizacional y su nexo con la gestión de los recursos humanos, la gestión del conocimiento y del capital humano, además de las relaciones entre estas gestiones. Finalmente, se tratan los procesos de capacitación orientados al desarrollo del conocimiento organizacional y se explican estos procesos según los puntos de vista de varios autores, así como su influencia en el desarrollo organizacional.

The relations and differences among the data, information and knowledge notions are defined and approached. The explicit and tacit knowledge are characterized, and their possible combinations, and the importance of the management of both types of knowledge for the organizational development are analysed. This is followed by an analysis of the theoretical-practical context in which the processes of knowledge identification and development take place. The organizational knowledge and its link with human resources, knowledge and human capital management, as well as the relations among them, are dealt with. Finally, the training processes oriented to the development of organizational knowledge are exposed, and these processes and their influence on organizational development are explained according to the points of view of various authors.

Information organization and retrieval: an approach from the automatization perspective

Se aborda la organización y recuperación de la información desde la perspectiva de la automatización. Así, se trata la indización automática o asistida por computadora, el lugar de la lingüística en la recuperación de la información, la aplicación del paradigma cognitivo a esta área del conocimiento y los diferentes modelos para la recuperación interactiva de la información y la interacción hombre-máquina.

The organization and retrieval of information is analysed from the perspective of the automatization process. The automatic or computer-assisted indexing, the role of linguistics in information retrieval, the application of the cognitive paradigm to this area of knowledge, the different models for the interactive retrieval of information and the human-computer interaction are dealt with.

The Cuban public library from 1959 to 1989

Se aborda el desarrollo de la biblioteca pública en Cuba entre los años 1959 y 1989. Se precisan los factores económicos, políticos y socioculturales con mayor influencia en la evolución de las bibliotecas en el país durante el período estudiado. Los nexos entre el entorno y la vida interna de la biblioteca pública revelan los avances y resultados alcanzados por esta entidad en tres etapas significativas de su desarrollo, que definieron su formación, auge y consolidación como unidad de información.

An analysis is made on the development of the public library in Cuba between 1959 and 1989. The political, economic and socio-cultural factors influencing the most on the evolution of the libraries in the country during the studied period are stressed. The links between the environment and the internal life of the public library reveal the advances and results reached by this entity in three significant phases of their development that defined their formation, boom and consolidation as an information unit.

Search of the bibliographical work of Carlos Manuel Trelles in health sciences

Con motivo de cumplirse este año 2006 el aniversario 140 de su natalicio, se dedica un espacio a honrar la memoria del célebre bibliógrafo cubano Carlos Manuel Trelles y Govín con la divulgación de algunos datos importantes acerca de su quehacer en el terreno de la bibliografía. Se brinda una síntesis de su vida y su obra, con inclusión de una información sucinta de su actividad como historiador y patriota, al tiempo que se puntualiza su valioso aporte como bibliógrafo de la literatura médica en particular. Se destaca su primicia en la agrupación y la sistematización de la producción científica de los médicos cubanos desde la época colonial hasta bien entrada la etapa republicana, con independencia del lugar de privilegio que ocupa en la historia de la Bibliotecología y de las Ciencias de la Información como el más sobresaliente bibliógrafo cubano de todos los tiempos. Se presentan también y se comentan los títulos que dedicó a la bibliografía médica, que corroboran el alcance de su labor en el sector específico de las ciencias de la salud.

On the occasion of the 140 th anniversary of his birth, a space is dedicated to honor the memory of the famous Cuban bibliographer Carlos Manuel Trelles and Govín, with the disclosure of some important data about his work in the field of bibliography. A synthesis of his life and work is made, including succinct information of his activity as a historian and a patriot. At the same time, the value of his contribution as a bibliographer of the medical literature in particular is stressed. His first results obtained in gathering and systematizing the scientific production of the Cuban doctors from the colonial period to late in the republican stage, independently of the privileged place he occupies in the history of Library Science and of Information Sciences as the most outstanding Cuban bibliographer of all times, are highlighted. Some of the titles dedicated to medical bibliography that corroborate the scope of his work in the specific sector of the health sciences are presented and commented.

Scientific production on the therapeutic applications of ozone at the Web of Science

Uno de los descubrimientos más notables durante los últimos años en el campo de la medicina alternativa es el empleo del ozono como agente terapéutico. No obstante, a pesar de la práctica cada vez más extendida de la ozonoterapia en el mundo, existen todavía aspectos contradictorios alrededor de su aceptación como técnica terapéutica, y algunos medios de comunicación han afirmado que no existe evidencia científica que acredite sus supuestas ventajas. El presente trabajo constituye un estudio bibliométrico con el objetivo de identificar y analizar la producción científica sobre aplicaciones terapéuticas del ozono existente en el Web of Science. Se recuperaron 117 artículos sobre le temática. Se identificó el índice de asociación de los autores; los autores, revistas y países más productivos; los artículos más citados; las redes de colaboración internacionales; las especialidades más beneficiadas; y los padecimientos más tratados con la ozonoterapia. A pesar de la escasa producción científica sobre las aplicaciones terapéuticas del ozono recogida en el Web of Science, se observó un crecimiento exponencial de esta durante la última década, así como una amplia gama de patologías que registraron sus efectos positivos. Ello confirmó la existencia de una evidencia científicamente válida que acredita su uso como técnica terapéutica en la práctica clínica.

One of the most remarkable discoveries during the last years in the field of Alternative Medicine is the use of Ozone as therapeutic agent. Nevertheless, in spite of the increasingly extended practice of Ozone therapy in the world, contradictory aspects about their acceptance as a therapeutic technique still exist, and some mass media have asserted that there is no scientific evidence that supports their supposed advantages. The current work is a bibliometric study of the Web of Science, aimed at identifying and analysing the scientific production on therapeutic applications of Ozone. A total of 117 articles were retrieved. The authors' association index; the most productive authors, journals and countries; the most cited articles; the international cooperation networks; the most benefited specialties; and the most ozone-treated illnesses were identified. Despite the scanty scientific production on the ozone therapeutic applications gathered in the Web of Science, an exponential growth of the articles during the last decade was observed, as well as a wide range of pathologies that registered their positive effects, which confirmed the existence of a scientifically valid evidence that supports its use as a therapeutic technique in the clinical practice.

The Web as an information system

Se abordan los antecedentes históricos, teóricos y prácticos, necesarios para el surgimiento de una nueva área en las ciencias de la información: la recuperación y la importancia del Web como nuevo espacio para la interacción del hombre con la información hipertextual. Se exponen también, los conceptos Web superficial y Web profundo; se describen algunos de los principales buscadores útiles para explorar el Web profundo, así como las nuevas herramientas para la recuperación de la información como la minería textual y de datos y el descubrimiento de conocimientos en bases de datos.

The practical, theoretical, and historic antecedents necessary for the rise of a new area in information sciences are analyzed: the recovery and the importance of the Web as a new space for the interaction of man with the hypertextual information. The concepts of superficial Web and deep Web are exposed, and some of the main useful search engines to explore the deep Web, as well as the new tools for the information retrieval, such as the textual and data mining and the discovery of know-how in databases are described.

Case reports in Medicine and Dentistry: gender morphophysiology

Sobre las bases de la Lingüística Hallidiana y la Teoría de Género, se realizó un estudio sincrónico de veintiocho reportes de caso en medicina, todos escritos en idioma inglés. Este género de las ciencias médicas tiene un alto valor educativo. Por ello, constituye siempre una sección que se consulta en las publicaciones periódicas de cualquier especialidad médica. Atendiendo a un grupo de variables cualitativas: a) contenido, forma y función; b) situacionalidad; c) dinamismo textual y d) patrones de comunicación, se revelaron las formas en que el contexto social de producción regula los diferentes movimientos textuales y su expresión en la léxico-gramática y el estilo científico del discurso. Los resultados del presente estudio demuestran la importancia del estudio lingüístico-comunicativo y estilístico, para la enseñanza-aprendizaje de formas textuales particulares de determinadas comunidades discursivas.

Based on Systemic Functional Linguistics and Genre Theory, a synchronic study of twenty-eight case reports, written in English, was carried out. Due to their high educative value, case reports always constitute a section to consult in medical and dentistry journals. The study, which was based upon a group of qualitative variables: a) content, form and function; b) situationality; c) textual dynamism and d) patterns of communication, revealed how the social context of production regulates textual moves and the ways they are expressed in the lexico-grammar and the style of scientific discourse. These results demonstrate the importance of the linguistic-communicative and stylistic study for the teaching-learning process of particular textual forms of certain discourse communities..

Brief description of the Cuban public libraries before 1959

Se abordan los principales antecedentes de la biblioteca pública cubana en el período prerrevolucionario, antes de 1959; las principales instituciones bibliotecarias creadas en la época colonial y su repercusión en la vida cultural de la sociedad y su permanencia en el tiempo, a pesar de los fracasos y la falta de apoyo financiero estatal; así como el deterioro de las bibliotecas públicas, durante 58 años, como reflejo de la depauperación política, económica y social de nuestro lperíodo republicano.

The main antecedents of the Cuban public library in the pre-revolutionary period, before 1959, the main librarian institutions created in the colonial epoch, their impact on the cultural life of the Cuban society and their permanence in time, in spite of the failures and of the lack of financial state support; as well as the deterioration of the public libraries for 58 years, as a reflection of the social, economic, and political impoverishment of the Cuban republican period, are dealt with in this paper.

Doctor Jorge Aguayo y de Castro: A pioneer of the modern library in Cuba

Se exponen las ideas del eminente profesor y precursor del movimiento bibliotecario gestado en Cuba en la primera mitad del siglo XX, Jorge Aguayo y de Castro. Se presenta la imagen que tuvo del contexto bibliotecológico que le correspondió vivir. Se ilustra, a grandes rasgos, una parte de nuestra tradición bibliotecaria y la postura asumida por nuestros antepasados en su tiempo. El examen se inserta al desarrollo del acontecer histórico social y de la rama a nivel mundial.

The ideas of this eminent professor and precursor of the librarian movement gestated in Cuba in the first half of the 20th century, Jorge Aguayo y de Castro, are exposed. The image he had of the library context in which he lived is presented, and a part of our library tradition, as well as the position assumed by our ancestors at that time are broadly illustrated. The analysis is inserted in the historical, social, and library development worldwide. .

The information professional's ethics in the threshold of the new knowledge society

Se presenta una investigación basada en los principios filosóficos de la ética. Se examina la función que desempeña el estudiante egresado de Bibliotecología y Ciencia de la Información. Se reflexiona acerca del código de ética determinado por diversas instituciones, que centran su trabajo en la esfera de la actividad de información científico investigativa. Se establece una valoración crítica acerca de la conducta ética que desarrolla actualmente el profesional de la información, así como la influencia de sus actitudes frente a la sociedad del conocimiento emergida por los paradigmáticos procesos tecnológicos.

A research based on the philosophical principles of ethics is presented. The role developed by the graduated from Library and Information Sciences is studied. Reflections on the ethics code determined by different institutions, which focus their work on the sphere of the scientific-research information activity, are included. A critical assessment about the ethical behaviour developed at present by the information professional is established, as well as the influence of his attitudes on the knowledge society emerged through the paradigmatic technological processes.

Intranet of the National Medical Sciences Information Centre- Infomed: a working space in the network for the health information system in Cuba.

Se expone la visión, misión, escenario, valores, factores críticos del éxito y los objetivos del Centro Nacional de Información de Ciencias Médicas-Infomed, como organización líder del Sistema Nacional de Información en Ciencias de la Salud en Cuba. Se aborda la creación de la intranet de la institución, su tecnología, su política y diversos aspectos sobre su utilización. La creación de la intranet del centro es, sin lugar a dudas, desde la perspectiva de la gestión del conocimiento organizacional, una formidable herramienta para el cumplimiento de su misión y objetivos.

The vision, mission, setting, values, critical factors of success and objectives of the National Medical Sciences Information Centre- Infomed, leading organization of the National Health Sciences Information System in Cuba, are exposed. The creation of the institution's intranet, its technology, policy and diverse aspects on its utilization, are approached. The creation the centre's intranet from the perspective of the organizational knowledge management is, undoubtedly, a formidable tool for the fulfilment of its mission and objectives.

Really Simple Syndication, RSS por sus siglas en inglés, es uno de los formatos de datos más utilizados para la gestión de contenidos en Internet, debido a su facilidad de uso y versatilidad; se emplea en las más diversas formas de intercambio de información. Se aborda su aplicación en el servicio de noticias de salud de Infomed: “Al Día” y en el servicio de diseminación selectiva de la información que ofrece Medline, una base de datos de uso por excelencia en el campo de las ciencias médicas y afines.

Really Simple Syndication, known as RSS by its acronyms in English, is one of the most used data formats in the management of contents on Internet, due to its user friendliness and versatility. It is utilized in the most diverse ways of information exchange. Its application in the health news service of Infomed: “Al Dia” and in the selective information dissemination service provided by Medline, a database par excellence in the field of medical and related sciences, is approached.
