RESUMEN El Aloe vera estimula la proliferación celular, poseeactividad antibacteriana, antifúngica, antiinflamatoria y cicatrizante, entre otras propiedades. Con el objetivo de describir el uso los productos derivados de esta planta en el tratamiento de la enfermedad periodontal inflamatoria crónica, se realizó una revisión de la bibliografía actualizada relacionada con el tema. Los artículos se identificaron a través de la búsqueda automatizada en las bases de datos Scielo, PubMed y EBSCO, de enero a abril del 2017. Fueron seleccionados 32 materiales, escritos en idioma español e inglés, publicados entre los años 2006 y 2017. Co esta revisión se constató que la actividad biológica de los compuestos bioactivos del gel, son útiles para relacionar el efecto terapéutico del Aloe vera en la enfermedad periodontal

ABSTRACT Aloe vera stimulates cellular proliferation and has antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and healing activity, among other properties. With the aim of describing the usage of products prepared with this plant in the treatment of the chronic inflammatory periodontal disease, a review of updated bibliography related with the theme was carried out. The articles were found through the automatic search in SciELO, PubMed and EBSCO databases, from January to April 2017. There were chosen 32 items, written in Spanish and English, published in the period 2006-2017. It was stated with the search that the biological activity of the gel bioactive components are useful to relate the Aloe vera therapeutic effect in the periodontal disease

Education in sexually-transmitted diseases from the early adolescence: unarguable necessity

RESUMEN La adolescencia es una etapa formativa de la identidad, autonomía y proyecto de vida. Con el objetivo de estructurar los referentes teóricos actualizados sobre la relevancia de la educación en infecciones de transmisión sexual desde la adolescencia temprana, se realizó la revisión de 39 artículos científicos. Actualmente se ha redimensionado el proceso salud enfermedad, con énfasis en la salud integral y promoción de la salud. Las intervenciones educativas encaminadas a propiciar estilos de vida saludables encuentran un marco propicio en la adolescencia, período crítico en la formación de las actitudes y consolidación de valores. Se enmarca esta etapa entre los 10 y 19 años, en la cual acontecen profundos cambios biológicos, psicológicos y sociales, que hacen al individuo vulnerable por conductas peligrosas e insanas. Se reportan temas priorizados, destacándose la salud sexual y reproductiva y la prevención de las infecciones de transmisión sexual, pues, la consumación precoz de relaciones sexuales y por demás desprotegidas frecuentemente, conlleva a lamentables consecuencias relacionadas con el embarazo no deseado, aborto y a contraer estas entidades. Se concluye que la educación sexual integral es la estrategia fundamental para contribuir a la postergación de la relación sexual, la disminución de las parejas sexuales y el uso correcto del condón, lo cual tributa a la prevención de las infecciones de transmisión sexual en este grupo poblacional.

ABSTRACT The adolescence is a formative stage of the identity, autonomy and life project. With the objective of structuring the updated theoretical referents on the relevance of the education in sexually-transmitted infections from the early adolescence, 39 scientific articles were reviewed. Currently, the health-disease process has been remodeled, making emphasis in the integral health and in health promotion. Educative interventions directed to propitiate healthy life styles find a propitious background in the adolescence, a critical period forming behavior and consolidating values. This stage is framed in the ages between 10 and 19 years, where deep biological, psychological and social changes happen, making the individual vulnerable to dangerous and insane behaviors. Prioritized themes are reported, highlighting sexual and reproductive health and the prevention of sexually-transmitted infections because the precocious consummation of sexual relations, frequently unprotected, lead to deplorable consequences related to non-desired pregnancy, abortion and catching these entities. We arrived to the conclusion that comprehensive sexual education is the main strategy to contribute to sexual relations deferral, diminish the quantity of sexual partners and the condom correct use, what helps preventing sexually-transmitted infections in this population group.

Russell-Silver syndrome. Presentation of a case

RESUMEN El síndrome Russell Silver es una enfermedad genética de baja frecuencia, caracterizada por retardo del crecimiento prenatal y postnatal, dismorfias faciales y digitales, así como asimetría corporal. Se presenta una paciente femenina de dos años de edad, remitida a consulta de Genética Clínica, por retardo en el desarrollo pondoestatural psicomotor, dismorfias faciales y asimetría corporal. Se realizño el diagnóstico clínico de esta afección. Es importante establecer un diagnóstico precoz para la estimulación temprana, seguimiento multidisciplinario y se brindó un adecuado asesoramiento genético a los familiares.

ABSTRACT The Russell-Silver syndrome is a low-frequency genetic disease, characterized by a pre-natal growth retardation and postnatal digital and facial dysmorphia, and also body asymmetry. We present a female patient, aged 2 years, who was remitted to the consultation of Clinical Genetics because of a retardation in the psychomotor, height-weight development, facial dysmorphia and body asymmetry. The disease was clinically diagnosed. It is important to arrive to a precocious diagnosis for the early stimulation, multidisciplinary follow-up and adequate genetic advice to the relatives.

Wegener´s disease or granulomatosis with polyangiitis. Case presentation

RESUMEN La enfermedad de Wegener o granulomatosis con poliangeítis, es una enfermedad rara, que se caracteriza por presentar una vasculitis sistémica primaria granulomatosa, con afectación de las vías aéreas superiores, inferiores y el riñón. Se exponen las características clínicas y resultados de los exámenes complementarios realizados a un paciente del sexo masculino, de 24 años de edad, con rinitis, hemorragia pulmonar, insuficiencia renal aguda y anticuerpos anticitoplasmas de neutrófilos positivos.

ABSTRACT Wegener´s disease or granulomatosis with polyangiitis is a rare disease, characterized for presenting a primary granulomatous systemic vasculitis, with affectation of the upper and lower airways and the kidneys. The authors expose clinical characteristics and the results of the complementary exams performed to a male patient, aged 24 years, with rhinitis, pulmonary hemorrhage, acute renal insufficiency, and anti-cytoplasmic antibodies of positive neutrophils.

RESUMEN La asociación de la artrogriposis múltiple congénita con el síndrome uña -rótula es rara, porque ambas patologías son infrecuentes. Debido a la gran variedad de manifestaciones clínico-radiológica de ambos síndromes, es necesario conocer el cuadro clínico de cada una de ellas para poder identificar el origen de todas las afectaciones encontradas en el paciente, una vez alcanzada la adultez. Se presentó un paciente adulto tratado durante su infancia en el Hospital Pediátrico Eliseo Noel Caamaño, de Matanzas, con la asociación de ambas entidades, con el fin de observar su estado anatómico, funcional y radiológico actual. El objetivo fue estudiar la evolución clínico-radiológica del paciente a través del tiempo. Se concluyó que en este tipo de patologías se producen severas deformidades del Sistema Osteomioarticular, así como de otros sistemas, por lo que se requiere de un trabajo multidisciplinario y de un estricto seguimiento para lograr personas útiles a la sociedad a pesar de sus limitaciones físicas.

ABSTRACT The association of multiple congenital arthrogryposis with nail-patella syndrome is rare, because both pathologies are infrequent. Due to the great range of clinical radiological manifestations of both syndromes, it is necessary to know the clinical characteristics of each of them to identify the origin of these affections found in the patient after reaching the adulthood. It is presented an adult patient treated during the childhood in the Pediatric Hospital ¨Eliseo Noel Caamaño¨, of Matanzas, with the association of both entities, to observe his current anatomic, functional and radiological status. The aim was studying the patient´s clinical radiological evolution through the time. The conclusion we arrived at was that this kind of pathologies produce severe deformities of the Osteomyoarticular System and also of other systems, so it is required a multidisciplinary approach and a strict follow-up to offer the society useful persons in spite of their physical limitations.

Bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex. A case report

RESUMEN La extrofia vesical es una grave anomalía del desarrollo embriológico del seno urogenital y del sistema esquelético vecino. Se caracteriza por una falla de la pared anterior del abdomen y de la vejiga, cuya cara posterior-inferior, evertida hacia afuera, protruye en forma de hernia y exterioriza por completo el trígono, con los meatos ureterales eyaculando directamente hacia la pared abdominal; la asociación con epispadias es la regla. Se describió el caso de una paciente pediátrica con diagnóstico del complejo extrofia vesical-epispadias, entidad poco frecuente en nuestro medio, la cual evolucionó de manera favorable y se encuentra en espera de un segundo tiempo quirúrgico como parte de su tratamiento.

ABSTRACT The bladder exstrophy is a serious anomaly of theurogenital sinus´ embryologic development and the close skeletal system, characterized by a failure of the abdomen anterior wall and bladder, whose posterior inferior face, turned outside out, protrudes like an hernia and completely exteriorizes the trigone, with the ureteral meatuses ejaculating right down to the abdominal wall; the association with epispadias is the rule. It was described the case of a pediatric patient with diagnosis of exstrophy- epispadias complex, infrequent entity in our country, who has evolved with great results and is waiting a second surgical time to finish her treatment.

Carbon monoxide intoxication. Case presentation

RESUMEN Este caso se corresponde con un paciente de 19 años, masculino, que durante su trabajo en una construcción soterrada inhaló de forma accidental los gases de la combustión del vehículo con que trabajaba. Está acción se prolongó por aproximadamente 30 min y luego permaneció en el lugar durante 3 h sin medios de protección individual. Esto trajo como resultados la aparición de síntomas correspondientes a una intoxicación moderada por monóxido de carbono, por tal motivo fue ingresado en una institución hospitalaria para recibir tratamiento.

ABSTRACT This is the case of a male patient, aged 19 years, who accidentally inhaled the combustion gases of the vehicle he worked with during his work in an underground construction. This action lasted for around 30 minutes, and after that he stayed in the place for three hours without individual protection devices. It resulted in the onset of symptoms of moderated carbon monoxide intoxication. That was the motivation of admitting him in the hospital for treatment.

RESUMEN El tutor constituye el eje fundamental de la formación de los estudiantes de las Ciencias Médicas este no es cualquier trabajador o especialista; debe ser un experto en su área de competencia laboral, además de un educador y un gran comunicador capaz de motivar y de ejercer una influencia positiva sobre los educandos. En las esferas cognitivas como afectivas con su dedicación y formación dependen en gran parte de la adquisición de los conocimientos, habilidades y responsabilidades necesarios para ejercer eficazmente el rol que les corresponde y el grado de satisfacción de los estudiantes dentro del proceso educativo. Se plantea que la enseñanza tutelar constituye un pilar esencial en la formación del médico, del enfermero y el tecnólogo, pues le permite al educando lograr un mayor grado de independencia, creatividad y sentido de responsabilidad.

ABSTRACT The tutor is a main factor in training Medical Sciences students; he is not any worker or specialist: he should be an expert in his area of occupational competence, besides being an educator and a great communicator able of motivating and positively influencing the students in. Their dedication and training mostly depend on the acquisition of knowledge, skills and abilities to efficaciously play the role they have to play, and to reach the students´ satisfaction level in the teaching process. It is assumed that tutored teaching is an essential pillar in training physicians, nurses and technologists, because it allows the teacher to achieve a higher level of independence, creativity and sense of responsibility.

RESUMEN Se realizó una revisión de los conceptos más conocidos dentro del ámbito organizacional que abordan al valor como categoría científica. Se analizan y se destacan sus principales aportes al mundo laboral. Se logra concretar un conjunto de ideas y reflexiones que guían investigaciones y nuevos juicios acerca de este proceso psicológico con importante peso en la legitimación y alineación del comportamiento. Se muestra la importancia de su gestión en instituciones de salud en Cuba.

ABSTRACT We carried out a review of the most commonly known concepts of the organizational field, approaching value as a scientific category. Their contribution to the occupational world were analyzed and highlighted. It allowed summing up ideas and reflections to direct research and judgments about this psychological process with important weight in the behavior legitimating and adjustment. The importance of its management in Cuban health institutions is shown.

Public politics in medical education and their influence on the curricular readjustment

RESUMEN Los desafíos del mundo actual exigen otorgar a la salud una prioridad dentro de las políticas sociales y en este proceso la universidad asume una posición de principios. En los últimos años, diversos países de la región latinoamericana y del mundo han mostrado el resultado del trabajo de reajuste de los currículos de formación. Se advierte el interés de acercar más al profesional a la atención primaria de salud y se implementan nuevas disciplinas, para lograr cumplir con las metas de Salud para Todos de la Organización Mundial de la Salud. Cuba por su parte, se ha caracterizado por mantener desde 1959 una línea coherente de trabajo para lograr la calidad de los servicios de salud. La formación de médicos ha sido desde entonces una tarea estratégica y una serie de planes de estudio han permitido en cada momento histórico enfrentar estos retos. Disímiles son los criterios publicados en estos últimos años con respecto a la manera en que hoy se conduce la formación básica del futuro galeno, lo que ha generado debates entre los interesados y al fin motivado reformas, aunque estas aún insuficientes. Actualmente se implementa un nuevo plan de estudios en la carrera de medicina, verdadera tarea para los docentes que llevan a cabo esta labor. El propósito es promover una reflexión acerca del tratamiento de las políticas públicas en salud de la región y en particular el de Cuba, haciendo hincapié en la educación médica como eje formador y sostenedor de la misma.

ABSTRACT The challenges of the current world require conferring to health care a priority among the social politics, and in this process the medical university assumes a position of principles. During the last years, several countries of the Latin American area and around the world have showed the results of the readjustment of the training curriculums. It is noticed the interest of approaching professionals to the primary health care, and new subjects are implemented, to reach the aims of Health for everyone, the program of the World Health Organization (WHO). Cuba, for its part, has been characterized for keeping up a coherent line of work to achieve the quality of health services since 1959. Since them the training of physicians has been a strategic task, and a series of study plans have allowed to affront these challenges in each historical moment. Several criteria have been published in the last years with respect to the way the basic training of the futures physicians is led; it has generated disputes among the interested factors, motivating reforms at the end that are still insufficient. Currently, a new study plan is implemented in the medicine studies, a true task for the teaching staff carrying this task out. The aim is promoting reflections on the treatment of public health politics in the region and particularly in Cuba, making emphasis in medical education as its training and sustaining axis.

Advantages of the use of interval estimations for population proportions

RESUMEN En este trabajo los autores argumentan la necesidad de incluir el cálculo de estimaciones por intervalos para proporciones poblacionales. Se discute un ejemplo real donde se pone de manifiesto la insuficiencia del intervalo estándar para las proporciones, a pesar de su uso generalizado en las investigaciones. Se propone el uso del intervalo de Wilson.

ABSTRACT In this article, the authors argue the necessity of including the calculation of interval estimations for population proportions. A real example is discussed the insufficiency of the standard interval for proportions is stat, in spite of its generalized use in researches. The Wilson´s interval is proposed.

RESUMEN Numerosas personalidades participaron en las luchas por la independencia cubana, siendo los más reconocidos hombres de la talla de Céspedes, Maceo y Gómez. Un gran número de ellos han ido quedando en el olvido con el paso de los años, a pesar de que dieron todo sin pedir nada a cambio. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo describir la figura del destacado Dr. Enrique Núñez de Villavicencio y Palomino, el cual constituye un paradigma para los profesionales de la salud cubanos, y ha permitido que la Historia de la Medicina cubana goce de un merecido prestigio, no sólo por el valioso legado que ha aportado como científico, sino también por su valor humano y por ser hijo fiel y amante defensor de su Patria. Se citaron un total de 21 referencias bibliográficas.

ABSTRACT Several personalities took part in the battles for Cuban independence, being the most recognized men of the stature of Céspedes, Maceo and Gomez. A large number of them have been left into anonymity over the years, even when they gave everything without asking anything in return. The present work is aimed at describing the figure of the prominent Doctor of Medicine Enrique Núñez de Villavicencio y Palomino, who is a paradigm for Cuban health professionals, and has allowed the History of Cuban Medicine to have the benefit of a well-deserved prestige, not only for the valuable contribution as a scientist, but also for his human values and for being a faithful son and defender of his motherland. A total of 21 bibliographical references were cited.

RESUMEN No puede relatarse el desarrollo de la ciencia cubana, sin la valoración justa y aceptada del papel desempeñado por destacados científicos matanceros; en el presente trabajo se aborda el quehacer de tres destacadas, figuras que dejaron su impronta en las nuevas generaciones: Juan Santos Fernández Hernández (1847-1922), Ángel Arturo Aballí Arellano (1880-1952) y José Isaac Corral Alemán (1882-1946), hombres nacidos en diferentes lugares de la geografía matancera. stos científicos, en condiciones políticas y económicas difíciles fueron capaces de prevalecer en el tiempo y moldear con su ejemplo imperecedero a las generaciones de científicos cubanos que les sucedieron.
