^les^aSe presentan las principales características formales y de contenido del primer documento científico conocido hasta ahora, el Papiro Médico de Edwin Smith, cuyo texto original se remonta a los tiempos del primer período del Antiguo Imperio egipcio. Se brindan algunos elementos acerca de la estructura de esta remota prueba documental de la actividad médico-quirúrgica; se comenta su cualidad como singular fuente de referencia sobre el estado del conocimiento científico en esa lejana etapa de la historia de la humanidad y se acredita por su conducto la gran importancia que entonces se otorgaba a la técnica operatoria, en contraste con el uso de preparados medicinales. Al final se anexa el ejemplo de uno de los 48 casos abordados en el manuscrito, el cual se refiere a los pasos que se daban en aquel tiempo para tratar una dislocación de mandíbula.^len^aThe main formal and content characteristics of the first scientific document known up to now, the medical papyrus of Edwin Smith, whose original text dates from the times of the initial period of the Old Egyptian Empire, are presented. Some elements are given about the structure of this old documental evidence of the medical and surgical activity. Comments are made on its quality as a singular source of reference on the state of scientific knowledge in that remote stage of the history of mankind. The importance granted to the operative technique at that time compared with the administration of preparations is also known through this document. At the end, it is given an example of the 48 cases approached in the manuscript, which made reference to the steps taken then to treat a mandible dislocation.
