^les^aDebido a la necesidad de desarrollar o adoptar un sistema para el manejo electrónico de las historias clínicas del Hospital Psiquiátrico de La Habana, se revisó la literatura sobre el tema, tanto a escala nacional como internacional. Desde el punto de vista técnico, la automatización de los registros médicos del Hospital Psiquiátrico de La Habana, implica diseñar una base de datos y un sistema que responda, tanto a las necesidades de información de la institución como a la como necesidad objetiva de un sistema nacional de información médica, de un medio de enlace a ese sistema, hoy hipotético pero necesariamente real. Ello obliga a que cada subsistema hospitalario de manejo de registros médicos no se diseñe en forma aislada y con criterio propio, sino en forma normalizada con el objetivo de enlazar posteriormente con facilidad cada uno de ellos en una intranet nacional, donde en una segunda fase, se integrarían los consultorios médicos.^len^aDue to the need of adopting or developing a system for the electronic management of the medical histories of the Psychiatric Hospital in Havana, a review of the literature available at the national and international level was made. From the technical point of view, this process requires the designing of a database and a system that meet both the institution's information requirements and the objective necessity of a national medical information system, of a link to that system, that is still hypothetical, but undoubtedly real. This will force each hospital subsystem of medical history management to be designed in a way in which they are not isolated from the national system and they are not based on individual criteria, but on normalized systems aimed at being easily linked to a national intranet to which the family physician's offices will be integrated on a second phase.
