^les^aDurante los últimos años han crecido las dificultades para la identificación inequívoca de los autores en la literatura mundial a causa del crecimiento de dicha literatura y de las formas de identificación utilizadas por autores, editores y productores de recursos de información, como son las bases de datos. Se requiere entonces de un mecanismo capaz de identificar de manera correcta, permanente y universal, y de unificar bajo una sola denominación o código, diferentes formas de identificación de un mismo autor, así como discriminar entre individuos diferentes con una misma forma de identificación. Hoy existen varios identificadores con avances importantes en este sentido. No obstante, la mayoría de las iniciativas presentan un carácter limitado o local. Se impone entonces la búsqueda de identificadores universales. Se revisan algunos de los identificadores de autores más sobresalientes; se expone la experiencia de los autores con el identificador de autor de Scopus y también las características principales de ORCID (Open Researcher and Contribution ID) el identificador considerado como el que posee las mayores posibilidades de universalizarse para los campos del quehacer académico y científico a partir de sus iniciativas dirigidas a la creación de relaciones de equivalencia entre este y otros sistemas de identificación.^len^aDifficulties to unequivocally identify authors in global bibliographic production have increased in recent years. This is due to the growth of such production and the identification devices used by authors, editors and producers of information resources, such as databases. A mechanism is thus required to unify all the forms of identification of a given author in an accurate, permanent and universal manner, following a single denomination or code, and to discriminate between different individuals with one and the same form of identification. Several identifiers have achieved considerable progress in this respect. However, most initiatives are either local or of a limited scope. It is therefore necessary to find universal identifiers. An analysis was made of the most outstanding author identifiers. The paper describes the experience of authors with the Scopus author identifier, as well as the main features of ORCID (Open Researcher and Contribution ID). This identifier was found to have the greatest chances of becoming universal for scientific and scholarly activity, due to its initiatives aimed at creating equivalence relationships with other identification systems.
