The evolution experienced with the course of time by information professionals in their ostensible function, due to the need to satisfy demands of growing importance is dealt with. An analysis is made of the influence exerted by the changing circumstances of each epoch on the transformation and improvement of the role of these professionals in society. The traditional tasks that these professionals should still perform according to their nature are analyzed as well as the justifications for those tasks they have had to assume for a long time, up to the appearance of new information and communication technologies. Emphasis is given to the high responsibility that corresponds particularly to information professionals within the health field, as members of multidisciplinary teams with the main function of negotiating evidence based information and know-how directed to the conservation, support and recovery of health and the prolongation of human life.
