Abstract

QUIROS ESPINOSA, Ángel  and  MACHADO LOPEZ, Roberto. Hydroecological experiences in the design of Caibarién causeway (2). RIHA [online]. 2013, vol.34, n.3, pp. 70-76. ISSN 1680-0338.

The way in which bridge openings were calculated as well as the position of each bridge at the road are presented. The openings must ensure the highest possible hydraulic interchange between both sides of Caibarién-Cayo Santa María causeway. A different calculation was applied for each layout section -not for the total layout- having quasi-homogeneous hydraulic conditions based on mass continuity and enforcing a maximum velocity of 1,5 m/s below bridges to prevent erosion, given that this velocity does not erode gravel according to current experience in channel flow. A series of observations are included that, 18 years after closure, seem to indicate a remarkable environmental success.

Keywords : marine environment; marine hydraulics; coastal works; marine causeway.
