This article makes a brief reflection on the role of writing and argumentation in Colombian schooling. It analyzes how the skills of reading and writing are articulated around the purposes of education and scientific, technological and social development. A review of the subject is carried out based on the performance of students in the last grade of secondary education in Colombia. Analyses and inquiries are proposed that respond to the needs of the school, social, political and cultural environment. In this way, it is intended to contribute to the formation of an individual with a critical sense, in accordance with his time, with the cognitive needs and requirements to function as a citizen of the world, with more coherent relationships between human and technological.
