An experimental and longitudinal study was conducted from January, 1995, to October, 1996 at the "Dr Ambrosio Grillo" Clinical and Surgical Provincial Hospital, in Santiago de Cuba, among 130 patients with diagnosis of gynecological, vascular urological, proctological, and gastrointestinal surgery, and hernioplasty to be electively operated on (with hematocrite above 034 vol/% and hemoglobin over 11 g/dl). The advantages of selfdonation by the preoperative extraction and the economic benefit it represents were evaluated. The transfusions administered in connection with blood losses were determined. The distribution was balanced according to age, weight and preoperative diagnosis. Marked differences were not found either in the hematologic results or in the mean values of hemodynamic indicators. There were no complications with the procedure used
