Resumen

GARCIA TIRADA, Miriam  y  ENRIQUEZ RODRIGUEZ, Rodolfo. Characterization of the climacteric syndrome in women undergoing surgical castration. Rev Cubana Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2001, vol.27, n.2, pp. 106-113. ISSN 1561-3062.

200 menopausal patients from “Enrique Cabrera” General Hospital and from Capdevilla Health Area were studied from January, 1997, to March, 1998, aimed at determining the relationship existing between surgical menopause and the climacteric signs and symptoms. There were 2 groups of 100 castrated female patients and with natural menopause, respectively. It was proved that natural menopause was more frequent from 45 to 49 years old, whereas 60 % of the castrated female patients were under 40. The middle and higher middle educational level predominated among the female patients with surgical menopause (64 %), whereas in the group with natural menopause only 41 % had this level. 63 % of the study group were workers, 26 % were housewives and 11 % were students. In the control group, 42 % were workers, 58 % were housewives and there were no students. The castrated female patients began to have sexual relations earlier. The main cause of castration was the tubo-ovarian abscess. The menopausal symptoms appeared before the 7 days in 67 % of the patients and the main symptoms were: blush, sweatings, irritability and reduction of the libido with significant differences with the control group. It was concluded that the incidence of surgical castration is very high in our study and it was recommended to evaluate each case adequately before performing it.
