Today's managers at universities play a central role in guaranteeing that these institutions contribute to meeting social demands and needs. This role has gained in significance because there is a need for universities to always work on a highly updated, pertinent, and superior basis in a constantly changing society and an institutional context marked by an increased complexity. Taking this as a starting point, this paper assesses potential and limitations of a competence-based approach to facilitate selection of managers being capable of carrying out their mission at 21st century universities.
