La Mama Negra (The Black Mama) and extension services provided by the Cotopaxi Technical University, present in sociocultural life in Latacunga canton of the Cotopaxi province in the Republic of Ecuador. The traditional festival known as "La Fiesta de la Mama Negra" reflects Latacunga society's cultural identity, and has become part of extension services provided by the Cotopaxi Technical University regarding promotion of artistic culture. In this work, the importance of conducting sociocultural studies is stressed first. Then, symbolic values of the festival are examined, and educational and cultural institutions' role in promoting this festival as a genuine expression of cultural heritage is underlined. This paper is aimed at examining main sociocultural aspects of the development of La Mama Negra as a festive expression in the parish of La Matriz in Latacumba city, and contributions made by the Cotopaxi Technical University by means of extension services.

Palabras clave : culture; interculturality; university extension.
