The role of Higher Education in developing scientific research at Ecuadorean Universities is presented in this paper, before and after the implementation of the education model established since 2008, which perceives these institutions as agents that generate social, cultural and environmental change with a vision of complex and integrating thought. It was found, through an exploratory and descriptive investigation, that the academic system in Ecuador over years had a teaching approach, different to the one used today. The successes achieved are presented mainly in scientific production at universities and in their staff's academic level. The need to implement strategies for eliminating the existing weaknesses in order to achieve international recognition is also stressed.
