This paper revisits the history of doctoral training at the University «Marta Abreu» of Las Villas, and shows the significance of this training as a mainstay of the scientific development. In this study, the history is divided in three epochs whose features are described. It is shown that doctoral training has had a general, gradual tendency toward a quantitative and qualitative increase, and factors influenced it favorably or negatively are identified. The conclusion is that doctoral training programs for faculty members have had a great impact on increased scientific results, external recognition, and visibility of the University. Doctoral training has been a mainstay of a scientific culture with which this Cuban higher education institution is identified at present.
