The proper selection and correct application of heat treatment technology for the manufacture of a machine element requires procedures and knowledge that today become much more complex. In all courses of study with a mechanical content, it is essential, in undergraduate and graduate studies, not only to know about them but also to apply them correctly. It is essential to know beforehand the required working conditions of temperature, environment, resistance of different kinds (tensile, bending, torsion, fatigue) and, sometimes, it is necessary to differentiate the properties of the core from those of the surface, which requires knowledge of a new science, «surface engineering». In the present work, in the form of algorithmic reasoning and with the application of new aspects, some already developed, it is intended to provide the essential elements to achieve a successful application that guarantees the working requirements of the element and its correct teaching.
