The study aimed to analyze the feelings of relatives of hospitalized clients in the Adult Intensive Care Unit (ICU). It is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory research. We interviewed 10 relatives of patients admitted in the ICU from a charity hospital in the north of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The data was collected through open interviews that were analyzed by the technique of discourse analysis. Showed up the following categories: "family feeling towards the patient in the ICU", "the ICU environment in the perception of family", "difficulties faced by family" and "spirituality and faith". The results highlight the changes in the process of coping by the relatives of their loved one, dealing with difficult feelings such as uncertainty and possible death. We observed changes that impacted on the family routine. The conclusion is the need to expand and improve quality care in the ICU in order to recognize the needs of families of clients across the hospitalization process.
