Introduction: during this century a third of the world's population will be affected due to drugs. In addition to its legal consequences, this phenomenon has important biopsychosocial disorders. Objective: To characterize drugs affecting consciousness and personality at Ana Betancourt polyclinic in Playa municipality. Method: a questionnaire was applied to 80 patients who were selected using sampling criteria, to explore aspects such as: reasons encouraging consumption, major risk factors, and frequent co-morbid disorders, which allow achieving the goal proposed. Results: 25.0% of the sample has no occupational bond. 43.7% had or maintains an occupation related to the manufacture, distribution or sale of alcoholic beverages. 50.0% have a family history of first degree of addiction. 60.0% referred that at some point in their lives, had attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder. 85.0% reported to have started in drug use in late adolescence. Personality disorder is the most common co-morbid disorder. The pursuit of pleasure persisted in 100% of the sample, as the main reason for the repeated use of drugs, at different stages of life. Conclusions: hedonic way was primarily responsible for addiction. Co-morbid conditions varied expressing mood, depression was one of the most common. Difficulties in interpersonal relationships are the main family risk factor for consumption.
