A descriptive and retrospective study of the incidence of hip fracture in the province of Sancti Spiritus from 1990 to 1999 was conducted. To this end, a total of 1 730 medical histories of all the patients that received medical attention due to this injury at the Orthopedics and Traumatology Services during this period were reviewed. The group over 65 and the females were the most affected. The surgical treatment was applied to 82 % of the patients and more than half of the patients had a hospital stay of more than 7 days. Most of those who died had a trochanteric fracture that predominated in comparison with the cervical fracture. An ascending increase was evidenced in the incidence rate of this type of injury during this 10-year period.
