A descriptive, cross-sectional study was performed so as to know arterial hypertensión characteristics in the health area "East", from september 1997 to september 1998. The study universe was composed of 1 489 patients, registered a hypertensive, belonging to 47 health clinics of the said polyclinic. Data source was formed by family and individual medical records of patients to whom the survey was applied. It was eleborated for the cuban study about tabaco and health. Within the patients studied, 55-64 years age group prevailed, with 26, 79 %, femenine sex, 63,46 % and the ocupational category of services, 30,36 %. It was concluded that half of hypertensive smoked, and ischemic cardiopathy resulted in the most frequent associated disease.
