IZQUIERDO DE LA ROSA, Hipólito y BETANCOURT SANCHEZ, Rafael. The functional dyspeptic patient and his therapeutic response. AMC [online]. 2005, vol.9, n.3, pp. 41-50. ISSN 1025-0255.
A prospective study of 635 patients who had been referred to the gastroenterology service of the Military hospital, City of Camagüey, for functional dyspepsia was conducted in the year 2003, 498 patients (162 males, 336 females) aged 15 to 60 were chosen for sampling. All organic-based or metabolic-based pathology was discarded through dye agent radiology testing, ultrasound scanning, endoscopy, analytic, testing, and physical examination. Functional dyspepsia prevailed among females over 60 and males aged 20 to 30. Of all patients assessed through clinical record scrutiny, and physical examination, prediction was precise for 70 females and 34 males. It was not necessary to use complementary methods. Request for gastroenterology care prevailed among patients without referral and patients without a diagnosis (109 and 132 respectively). Slow digestion, flatulence and epigastric ache were the most common symptoms. As the patients we dealt whit were heterogeneous in background, diagnostic or therapeutic methods depended on the individuals subjectivity and on the physicians diagnostic ability.
