A retrospective, descriptive study was conducted among patients diagnosed and treated for encephalic death at the intensive. Care Unit and at the Multiply Injury Service of the Manuel Ascunce Domenech General Hospital from January 2002 to December 2005. During this period a total of 42 encephalic deaths were diagnosed (21 % out of patients deceased at the hospital). Males aged 35 to 49 prevailed (52, 3 %). The causes for encephalic death were: craneoencephalic trauma (20 %); cerebrovascular stroke 76 %, brain tumor; hypoxic encephalopathy (2 %). Average hospital stay amounted to 3, 15 days (1-16). Intropic agents were used. 15 patients were administered hemoderivates, whereas blood packages were used in 6 patients. All of the patients who died were taken an interview (30 interviees, 84 % consented). One deceased was excluded from donating after the physician’s advice, whereas another head a heart arrest, which hindered organ donation.
