Background: diabetes mellitus is a complex syndrome constituted by several biochemical and metabolic disorders which affects to a number of organs and systems, constituting the most frequent serious metabolic alteration in the population. Objective: to identify the most frequent oral manifestations found in patients recently diagnosed as carriers of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Method: a descriptive cross-sectional study from November 2005 to November 2008 was conducted, among the Endocrinology service of the Provincial Hospital "Manuel Ascunce Domenech" and the Teaching Odontology Clinic "Ismael Clark." The universe was constituted by sixty-six patients, forty-one of the female sex and twenty-five of the masculine one, with ages between forty-two and seventy-four years. Sociodemographic and clinical variables, and the presence of associated vascular risk factors were analyzed. Results: the feminine sex (62%), white skin (64%) prevailed, presence of caries in the 94% of patients without significant difference among sexes, as well as the 58% with periodontal disease with slight prevalence of the masculine sex and the age group of fifty-one to sixty years predominated. Conclusions: tabacism was the most frequent associated risk factor with all the oral complications, followed by obesity and high blood pressure.
