RODRIGUEZ ALPIZAR, Rolando; AGUERO DIAZ, Alejandro; PUIG CAPOTE, Elizabeth  y  PEREZ CEDRON, Ricardo A. Emergency treatment for the relief of temporomandibular joint pain-dysfunction syndrome. AMC [online]. 2011, vol.15, n.4, pp. 687-696. ISSN 1025-0255.

Background: temporomandibular disorders are a group of signs and symptoms that include many clinical problems involving pain as the most common symptom, characterized by spasms of the masticatory muscle´s. It is estimated that 30 to 40 % of the general population presents any kind of temporomandibular disorder. Objective: to treat temporomandibular dysfunctional emergencies. Method: an educational intervention strategy was conducted in the Odontology Department at the University polyclinic Julio Antonio Mella, in Camagüey, from October 2007 to July 2008. The universe was made up of 25 patients who were attended in the prosthesis service and the sample was constituted by 18 patients selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: the female sex was the most representative. Concerning age groups, the range between 18 and 27 years old was the most prevalent. In all the eccentric mandibular movements, occlusal interferences were present in both, balance and work sides. The most common dysfunctions are: limitations of the oral openings and deviation of the middle line. Myofascial pain, as main symptom of this disease, was present at the majority of patients attended. Conclusions: the treatment applied had correspondence with individual pathological features of each case.
