Introduction: the periodontal diseases are second oral diseases more suffered by humans, they appear in early age, with slow and progressive development, and gingivitis is the most common one. Pregnant women are at high risk regarding these diseases, periodontal severity increases in the second and third trimester of pregnancy by the presence of poor oral hygiene. The use of an educational intervention strategy improves the level of knowledge about oral hygiene and gingivitis prevalence in this population group. Objective: assess the effectiveness of an educational program on oral hygiene and gingivitis in pregnant of Alcides Pino Bermúdez Polyclinic. Methods: a health intervention study was carried out in 68 pregnant patients between 15-35 years of age in the period October 2011 to October 2012 to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational program on oral hygiene and gingivitis attended at Alcides Pino Bermúdez Polyclinic. "Pregnancy and proper oral health" program was applied. Percentage was used as a summary measure for qualitative variables: level of knowledge and oral hygiene. Results: At the conclusion of the educational activity the level of adequate knowledge about gingivitis increased in 31 pregnants representing 45.59 % and oral hygiene was good in 50 pregnant representing 73.52 %. Conclusions: the level of knowledge about gingivitis and oral hygiene increased in most of pregnant women after applying the educational program predominated the age group between 25-29 years.
