VALENCIAGA RODRIGUEZ, José Luis; DIAZ DIAZ, Oscar y DOMINGUEZ ALONSO, Enma. Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Güines municipality in the year 2002: Drug therapy-based analysis. Rev Cubana Endocrinol [online]. 2003, vol.14, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-2953.
A cross-sectional study was made to identify the characteristics of treatment of persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Güines municipality during 2002, particularly the use of oral normo or hypoglicemic compounds and insulin. The universe was made up of 3 017 type 2 diabetics registered in the municipality in the year 2001 and the sample was composed of 328 cases, selected by means of a complex sampling design (stratified in the first stage and by conglomerates in the second phase). Data were statistically processed using version 10 of SPSS program. Age average of the sample was 65,2 years, and 12,8 years at the time of diagnosis. A total number of 161 persons (49,1%) based their treatment only on diet whereas 42 used intermediate action insulin and 3(7,1%) rapid action insulin. The most used hypoglycemic drug was glibenclamide in 131 cases (85,5%) and the mean daily dose was 15 mg whereas roughly 1 out of 10 cases used traditional herb medicine. It was concluded that there are deficiencies in the therapeutic management of diabetes, specifically in the way that insulin is used, low availability of oral normo or hypoglycemic compounds and high frequency of non-pharmacological treatment. It is recommended to reanalyze the fulfillment of the National Diabetes Mellitus Program in Güines municipality, making emphasis on the training of health care personnel as far as therapeutical aspects is concerned and also to increase the availability of oral normo or hypoglycemic compounds, particularly Metformin, in the municipality.
