Resumen

FONTE GALINDO, Luis; HERNANDEZ BARRIOS, Yisel  y  PEREZ CHACON, Dennis. Infected by SARS-CoV-2 and ill with COVID-19. Necessary corrections. Rev Cubana Hig Epidemiol [online]. 2020, vol.57  Epub 01-Sep-2021. ISSN 1561-3003.

On 11 February 2020 the World Health Organization chose the acronym COVID-19 to designate the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2. In Cuba, due to the early and appropriate adjustment of the Health and Science and Innovation Systems to the circumstances of a just-started epidemic, satisfactory control has been achieved of this virus infection. In most countries, including Cuba, most of the persons infected by SARS-CoV-2 are asymptomatic. With an excessive frequency inaccurate when not erroneous use is made in the mass media and the specialized medical literature of the phrases infected by SARS-CoV-2 and ill with COVID-19. Put into perspective, it is necessary to alert on the vague and equivocal use of these phrases by specialists and laypeople alike. Aside from the semantic confusion it may bring about, repetition of these phrases may cause inadequate risk perception and malpractice, and thus directly or indirectly affect the results of the response to the pandemic.

Palabras clave : SARS-CoV-2; COVID-19; infection; disease; semantics; communication.
