TORRES DAMAS, Esther Lilia; GARY PONCE, Zoamara; EXPOSITO TORRES, Yenny Esther y ZAPATA HUETE, Luis Alberto. Screening of the cerebrovascular failure of extracranial origin at "Capitan Roberto Fleites" polyclinics. Rev Cubana Angiol Cir Vasc. [online]. 2014, vol.15, n.2, pp. 183-194. ISSN 1682-0037.
Introduction: atherosclerosis is considered to be a chronic vascular disease that affects certain blood circulation areas and it manifests as great atherosclerotic crisis such as cerebrovascular insufficiency of extracranial origin. Objective: to describe the possibility of occurrence of cerebrovascular insufficiency of extracranial origin in a population screening and to identify risk factors and their association with the risk of becoming sick. Methods: a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 171 supposedly healthy patients aged 55-year old and more, regardless of sex, from the population assisted by the "Captain Roberto Fleites" polyclinics in Santa Clara in 2010. A survey was made, a peripheral vascular examination was performed mainly in the neck vessels and the atherosclerotic risk factors were then assessed. Results: females predominated (61.4 %) and the most relevant risk factor was high blood pressure (57.3 %). In 14.6% of cases, the more frequent symptoms were dizziness, headache, unstable gait and carotid murmur. Conclusions: a significant section of the population presents with high risk of occurrence of cerebrovascular insufficiency of extracranial origin. This requires a global strategy of treatments for the prevention of the disease in order to reduce its incidence rates.
