Introduction: acute pancreatitis is the cause of frequent admissions in the units of seriously-ill patients’ care of the Hospital “Comandante Faustino Pérez Hernández” of Matanzas. Sometimes they have complications causing extension staying and increasing mortality. Objective: to determine the clinical epidemiological behavior of acute pancreatitis in seriously-ill patients´ care units. Materials and Methods: a prospective, observational, descriptive study was carried out from January 2013 to December 2014, in the University Hospital “Comandante Faustino Pérez Hernández” of Matanzas, with patients who entered the hospital diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. The studied variables were age, risk factors, and patient´s status at discharging. Results: men predominated and also the age group ranging between 35 and 44 years (25,40 %). Alcoholism was the most represented risk factor (38,10 %). Mortality was 9,6 %. Conclusions: there they were predominant young people, male sex and alcoholism was the most frequent risk factor. Acute critical pancreatitis was the most frequent form. The showed survival was favorable, being higher than the one reported in the literature.
