DAVILA CABO DE VILLA, Evangelina y HERNANDEZ DAVILA, Carlos. Preoperative Anesthetic Specifications: What the Family Physician Must Know. Medisur [online]. 2013, vol.11, n.2, pp. 188-194. ISSN 1727-897X.
Performing any surgery entails a collective work which begins when the patient resorts to the family doctor, who is often characterized as "guardian of health"; being in close contact with the families she/he treats, visiting their homes and getting familiar with their lifestyles, hygiene, culture and all aspects that directly or indirectly influence on their health. Therefore, she/he is the most immediate professional involved in any health care issue. Using the well-established trust relationship with the family, he can contribute to the knowledge and dissemination of minimum requirements in anesthesiology. Thus; he can favor the preoperative evaluation as well as speed up and ensure the patient’s hospital care, with a greater degree of satisfaction. This literature review provides an increased guidance for family physicians, helping them to answer the questions that may arise and to contribute to the preoperative phase. Therefore, it contains what the patient needs to know and the main preoperative specifications.
