The aim of this work is to obtain a Case Based System by means of the combination of the Case Based Reasoning and CAD CAE (Computer Aided Design Computer Aided Engineering) technique to improve the use of the accumulated experience by the designers in the realization of new spur and helical cylindrical external gear designs. The case base was obtained from the information stored in the design files of the mechanical productions company. The recovery of the transmissions is carried out combining a selection query and the nearest neighboring technique. The initial data of the design are used as indexes whose relative importance settled down by means of Experts criteria. This way, the combination of database management system and CAD CAE system makes possible to use again previously designed transmissions, with or without modification, in new applications.
