ABSTRACT The measurement of functional abilities is a fundamental component in the evaluation of older adults that allows the identification of some degree of disability. Preservation of gait is an important requirement for a satisfactory old age. The objective of this study was to evaluate the special physical balance in the functional performance of older adults in the Grandparents home of Cienfuegos, using a quantitative, descriptive, prospective, non-experimental. The design crossed theoretical and empirical methods, within the latter, the measurement with the Tinetti test as an auxiliary medium; the statistical processing was performed with descriptive measures for quantitative data: dispersion and central tendency through the statistical package Excel. The results showed a male prevalence, an average age of 79.3 years and a degree of oscillation of the large result for the indicator High Risk of falls and small for the Risk of falls. With these results, it is concluded that there is a reduction of functional performances, loss of stability and independence to carry out activities of the daily life of this aged group
