The insufficiency of the ability to comprehensively treat pain demands that Universities and their faculties look for alternatives in the training model that, from a historical and contextual conception, help to train this skill. It is essential in the professional performance of the General Practitioner, for pain is becoming a recurrent health problem in the population.
Higher Education institutions are responding to this demand by studying skills building matters in theory and in practice. This article presents a diagnosis obtained by triangulating the data from surveys, interviews and documentary analysis, which revealed deficiencies in medical students’ ability to comprehensively treat pain in Cienfuegos. The authors put forth of a system of learning tasks to contribute to the development of this skill, to be accomplished in the healthcare context through on-the-job education as a guiding principle of medical training.
