Latin American society requires a more active role from its higher education institutions in the search for its progress and well-being. This article summarizes some of the aspects considered most important in the historical evolution of the university in our region since its origins. Several of the main transformations that take place after the advent of the Republic in the 19th century is studied; highlighting the significance of the Cordoba Reform. It also underlines the importance of the excess of university enrollment in the last 60 years and its consequences. Likewise, some indicators of interest are provided on this matter and other data that show the current unfavorable situation of Science in Latin America and the Caribbean. Due to its didactic value, the writing describes and assesses several of the antecedents that gave rise to the birth of universities during the Late Middle Ages in Western Europe and discloses interesting aspects of their organization and operation at that stage. In addition, some of the most pressing problems facing the Latin American university today are raised.
