The objective of this text is to analyze the correlation between the investigative capacities and the substantive functions of the teachers who guide research courses in faculties of education in the department of Antioquia. For its development, a quantitative approach was chosen using an empirical-analytical method. The sample consisted of 240 teachers to whom a research teacher profile questionnaire was applied. Among the most outstanding results, it was possible to demonstrate that investigative abilities (rho= 0.45, p<0.001) and substantive functions (rho= 0.35, p<0.001) correlate significantly and positively considering the reference value less than 0.05. The coefficient of determination R2 was 0.43, for which the hypothesis is accepted. Therefore, it is concluded that research capabilities are a variable that defines and directly influences the development of the substantive functions of research teachers. It is recommended to design a plan that strengthens the scientific processes in the degrees through the analysis of the conditions that enable or hinder their effective performance of the figure of the research teacher.
