Introduction:

World Health Organization designed a strategy for knowledge management for health services. However Cuban pharmaceutical services are lacking of tools for knowledge management for contributing to competencies and services development.

Methods:

The current state of pharmaceutical services in Havana was diagnosed, concerning knowledge management and competencies levels of professionals. Questionnaires were applied to 280 professionals and then validated; profound interviews were applied to directors and focal group experts all with pharmaceutical services expertise.

Results:

Diagnosis showed limitations in the individual as well as the organizational level, poor knowledge management and treatment, with poor competencies and performances of professionals. With diagnosis results, a strategy of knowledge management was designed with short, middle and long term actions with indicators for assessment. An action plan was designed and applied for the strategy implementation. It was validated with a high level of agreement among experts and high user satisfaction. Conclusions: the diagnosis of the current state of pharmaceutical services in the province of Havana, allowed for the design of a strategy of knowledge to be implemented in Cuban Pharmaceutical Services.
