Introduction:

The university management improvement is a priority for the Cuban higher education today. This challenge strengthens the importance of making transformations in a complex economic, socio-political, cultural, and environmental context. The role of the University Extracurricular Activities stands out in this context as an important social function and a formative process integrating the university-society links. The aim of this study is focused on the improvement of the process of university strategic planning for University Extracurricular Activities in the Medical University of Matanzas.

Methods:

The methodological approach includes the qualitative and the research-action ones. On the basis of the performed diagnosis, the authors present strategic planning, considering the process mentioned as a main Major Strategy impacting all university areas, between 2017 and 2020.

Results:

The authors modeled a methodology from which they attained a strategy for extracurricular activities; the actions of this strategy were integrated into the work system and the strategic planning, allowing for the improvement of the university management and contributing to the fulfilment of the Mission and Vision of the institution. It provided a reference framework having a transformation without precedents concerning its essence and social projection.

Conclusions:

Qualitative progress was evidenced in the management of the university quality and, at the same time, the paper reveals the necessity of continuing scientific research and deepening the strategic planning of extracurricular activities as an important function and university pedagogic process of a complex nature.
