DE ARMAS-ECHEVARRIA, Amanda Maria; CREMATA-ZALDIVAR, Laura y PEREZ-HERNANDEZ, Laura. Characterization of the direction and force of the wind in the International Airport "Abel Santamaria" in the period 2011-2015. Rev. Cubana Met. [online]. 2019, vol.25, n.2 Epub 01-Jun-2019. ISSN 2664-0880.
Actually, the aircrafts have an excellent performance; however, meteorology continues having an important impact on flight safety and efficiency. During the phases for the takeoff and landing of an aircraft, the wind direction and the wind speed are the most significant meteorological variables among others. There is an incomplete climate database at the Abel Santamaria International Airport in Santa Clara. Therefore, it was necessary to develop a climatological study for those variables at the airport. Two numerical methods were used to complete the database: the nearest neighbor and the Radial Basic Function (RBF), and better results were obtained with the second method. The descriptive statisticians and wind roses were used to characterize this variable using the complete database. It was identified that the predominant wind at the airport is from the East, reaching the maximum speed average from the East Northeast course. The month of May has the highest wind force values exceeding 19 km/h. From July to October, the winds are characterized by variable and weak winds. During the daytime cycle there is a maximum wind speed at 1600 and a minimum at 0700 (local time).
