ISSN 0258-5936.

The investigation was conducted from 1999 to 2003, with the objective of determining the effect of three different cropping systems on soil particle, bulk density, total soil porosity and rice yield. The factors evaluated were years of study and cropping systems: 1. “rice-rice” monoculture, two sowings were performed every year in the same soil area; 2. “rice-fallow-cattle-rice” annual rotation, sowing was done in the rainy season every year of the study, then a short fallow after harvest, later on cattle grazing followed by a new sowing; 3. “rice-soybean” annual rotation, rice was sown in the rainy season, then soybean and later on rice crop. Rice monoculture and cattle grazing deteriorated soil physical properties, whereas the annual rice-soybean rotation modified them just a little after three years. Also, agricultural yield was strongly affected where soil physical properties were degraded in a short time. The best measurements of soil bulk density and total porosity for rice production are between 1.12-1.20 Mg.m-3 and 54-57 % respectively.
