A descriptive, cross-sectional and randomized study was conducted among 125 patients with diagnosis of type II diabetes mellitus that received medical attention at “Dr. Tomás Romay” Polyclinic. One of the researchers interviewed all the patients to obtain information for the study. The body mass index was calculated taking into account the weight and height at that moment. The main measured variables were body mass index at present and at the onset of the disease and the hip circumference . History of chronic disease and demographic variables such as sex, color of the skin, and age were also taken into account. 79.2 % of the participants had a body mass index over 27 m2 of body surface. Most of them were females (64.8 %) and hypertensives (63.2 %). Extreme obesity was not observed in the studied diabetic patients and the hip circumference proved to be more sensitive than the body mass index in the diagnosis of diabetes.
