The interpretation and representation of charts of variables associated with biological functions are among the objectives of the program of Physiology I. As there is no an adequate development of these abilities within Higher Medical Education, a diagnostic chart test of abilities has been made at "Salvador Allende" Medical Faculty since the course 1994-1995. An evaluation of the abilites to interpret and construct charts was added the next course. The results of such tests in the two above mentioned abilities are shown in the present paper (by calculating a position index) for the different models of Middle Level Education (subdivided into vocational preuniversity institutes of Exact Sciences, other non-vocational preuniversity institutes, polytechnics and order 18). The level of these students is compared in 3 consecutive courses (95/96, 96/97 y 97/98). The vocational preuniversity institutes had the best results in both abilities. The interpretation had a better result than the construction of charts, even though there was a significant unbalance between the results obtained in both abilities by the students corresponding to order 18 and the middle level technicians. It is important to know their level in relation to the construction and interpretation of charts on entering the higher education institutions in order to exert educative differentiated influences, taking also into account their origin from Higher Middle Education.
