Resumen

ARAGONES CRUZ, Belmary  y  MARIN VALDES, María E. Results of the use of brachytherapy in choroidal melanoma. Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2006, vol.19, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3070.

With the objective of assessing the long-term results of episcleral iridium-192 implant brachytherapy for choroidal melanoma, a prospective/retrospective clinical study was performed, which covered 30 eyes for a period of 10 years. As a consequence, a reduction of the tumor volume was observed in 95,6 % of cases, Vision was preserved or improved in 63,3 % of treated eyes. Retinal detachment and neovascular glaucoma were the most frequent complications. Metastasis was detected in 3,3 % but no one died. Only 13,3 % required enucleation due to a relapse. It was concluded that iridium-102 brachytherapy constitutes an efficient therapeutic variant, with good results in survival (100%), and eye ball and visual acuity preservation, which provides the patient with better quality of life
