CABRERA MARTINEZ, José Alberto y CABRERA MARTINEZ, Abel. Visual results achieved in patients with pure astigmatism corrected with LASIK. Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2009, vol.22, n.1, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1561-3070.
OBJECTIVE: To determine visual results after the correction of pure astigmatism pure by Excimer laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). METHODS: We divided 96 eyes from 50 patients operated by LASIK, into 2 groups according to their degree of astigmatism using the laser Esiris with Carriazo´s microkeratome. After a preoperative ophthalmological study, visual results were analysed according to the degree of astigmatism and patients were followed-up for 6 months. RESULTS: The set objective was fulfilled in most of cases. It should be underlined that complete correction in high degree of astigmatism was difficult with the surgical technique mentioned above. Statistically significant difference was obtained in the sample. No serious or irreversible complications were detected. CONCLUSIONS: LASIK is a safe and useful technique for correcting astigmatism, but it faces difficulties in correcting high degrees of the defect. There was no serious or irreversible complication.
