PEREZ GONZALEZ, Henry; ANTOGNAZZA BALFARDA, Adriana  y  GARCIA CONCHA, Yanet. Results of catact surgery with topical anesthesia in patients with special conditions. Rev Cubana Oftalmol [online]. 2012, vol.25, n.1, pp. 85-93. ISSN 0864-2176.

Objective: To determine the results of cataract surgery with Blumenthal technique and topical anesthesia in patients with special conditions in “José Martí” Ophthalmological Center in Uruguay during 2010. Methods: A prospective, longitudinal and descriptive was carried out. The universe of study was 99 patients needing cataract surgery after being evaluated by the Basic Functional Rehabilitation Unit during 2010. The sample was 67 patients over 18 years-old carrying a “special condition”, who underwent cataract surgery with topical anesthesia, after evaluation and training. Results: The main reasons for referral to the unit were hearing disorders (44.78 %) and nervous breakdowns (25.37 %). Of these patients, 44.78 % were over 79 years of age and 53.74 % were men; senile cataract prevailed (85.07 %). The only intraoperative complication was posterior capsule rupture (1.49 %) whereas transient corneal edema was the most frequent postoperative complication (7.46%). Most of the patients (77.61 %) achieved good visual acuity after surgery. Conclusion: The results of cataract surgery with topical anesthesia in patients with special conditions were satisfactory because there was significant improvement in visual acuity with minimal intraoperative and postoperative complications.
