Contemporary society presents an accelerated pace of development, especially in the areas of science and technology, which requires the formation of individuals able to catch up with their time and to collaborate on changes and transformations that have been occurring; on the other hand, they must have the necessary tools to manage various hostile tendencies to humanity. The teaching and learning of literature could help to quit, in part, on the situation; without absolutizing this, or deny other positive influences. Although, there is no doubt that from the systematization of their teaching curriculum, humanistic education would be achieved, contributing to the formation of better people, better citizens. The man humanistic training provides the essential cognitive elements to understand better the world, appropriating an aesthetic education, together with the tuning of sensitivity, and the elevation of the moral and ethical qualities The authors of this study reaffirm that the student contact with literature can contribute to the formation of a way of thinking, the development of feelings of personal and cultural identity, in essence, consolidation of the human being; recognizing the educative power of literature. Unveiling these contributions, is essentially the purpose of the work, which has been possible from the literature and accumulated experience.
