The process of critical reading in Ecuadorian universities is focused on a new epistemic paradigm and has among its challenges the preparation of students. The general objective of the research is to diagnose the incidence of critical reading in the students' learning of the Industrial Engineering career in its first module and how it can contribute to the strengthening of student learning. A descriptive research was carried out, which allowed to know the situations, predominant reading habits in the students of the module under study. Methods such as analytical-synthetic, inductive-deductive, historical-logical, were used to obtain the evidence of the social dimension of the students of the module I of the Industrial Engineering career. This resulted in the difficulties that students present in their academic performance. It is also recognized that it is necessary for teachers to orientate and to assist students in the appropriation of critical reading to improve their level of understanding, analysis and synthesis and with them to improve their learning.
