This article examines the contributions that social research has made to the multidimensionality of development. An analysis of the conceptual evolution of the idea of development and territory is presented up to the conformation of the most recent paradigms regarding the understanding and imbrication of these categories. It addresses the perception of the sociocultural as a dimension, often relegated to the more traditional approaches to development especially in its processes of territorial scope. It constitutes a theoretical study of the fundamental referents that, in Latin America and especially in Cuba, have addressed the importance of taking into account the human element and its growth in development processes.
