SANTOS PENA, Moisés A et al. Urgencias clínico-estomatológicas: Guías para el diagnóstico y tratamiento. Rev Cubana Estomatol [online]. 2000, vol.37, n.1, pp. 5-49. ISSN 1561-297X.

Type of research: bibliogtraphic review (Updating topics). Objectives: To make an updated manual about the medical and dental emergencies that may occur at the dental office. To determine some clinical characteristics of the emergency affections that may appear at the dental chair. To identify the emergency treatment to be used in such entitites. To know the therapeutic variants to be applied to treat emergency diseases. Method: We reviewed the literature available at the Provincial Center of Information on Medical Sciences in Cienfuegos, and at the National Medical Library, assisted by the cybernetic methods (MEDLINE, LILAC and Infomed<?s Virtual Library) and by the scientific information received as an answer to personal requests. Data were processed by Microsoft Word of Windows 95, version 7.0. The design of our investigation was based on: medical and dental emergency affections that patients may present while receiving attention in the dental chair. Concept or definition of these affections. Etiology. Diagnosis. Therapeutic measures to solve the situation or to stabilize the patient if it is necessary to refer him to another medical assistance center. Results: The results are given as practical guides in 19 chapters that include the medical and dental affections that should be diagnosed and treated as an emergency to recover the patient that have them at the dental office. Conclusions: To conclude our investigation, we present a guide for the diagnosis and treatment of medical and dental emergencies that may appear frequently in the daily dental practice, mainly in primary attention. It may also be used as a consultation material by future comprehensive general stomatologists that together with family physicians preserve health in the community.
