Hypertension is considered at present as the most widely spread health disorder in the world. Recent studies suggest that the total body production of nitric oxide is diminished in patients with essential hypertension. An exhaustive review of the genesis of this compound since its original description in 1980 up to now was made. The evidences supporting its participation as cause and effect of the raised levels of arterial blood pressure as well as some therapeutic considerations on this regard were analyzed, too
