Resumen

FERNANDEZ GONZALEZ, José Luis et al. Estrés oxidativo: Enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica y tabaquismo. Rev cubana med [online]. 2002, vol.41, n.5, pp. 246-250. ISSN 1561-302X.

A prospective, longitudinal and descriptive study was conducted to know the behavior of oxidative stress in a sample of 80 individuals aged 45-65, who were divided into 4 groups, each with the same number of subjects: I. Apparently sound non-smokers; II. Apparently sound smokers; III. Smokers with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; IV. Ex-smokers with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The first 2 groups were selected at the "Primero de Enero" Teaching Polyclinic, in Consolación del Sur, and the other 2 at the Pneumology Service of "Abel Santamaría" Clinical and Surgical Hospital, in Pinar del Río, from September 1st, 1999, to March 31st, 2002. The concentration of malonyldialdehyde in blood, the catalase activity and superoxide dismutase were determined and categorized by age and sex. It was concluded that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease predominated in individuals over 55 and in males. The markers of malonyldialdehyde oxidative stress, catalase and superoxide dismutase increased significantly in smokers with this disease and decreased among ex-smokers with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The importance of oxidative stress in the genesis of this entity and its close relationship with smoking were demonstrated.

Palabras clave : OXIDATIVE STRESS; SMOKING; RISK FACTORS; FREE RADICALS; LUNG DISEASE, OBSTRUCTIVE; CATALASE [therapeutic use]; SUPEROXIDE DISMUTASE [therapeutic use].
